The learning experience of Northwestern Mutual’s “Top 10” internship (Vault Guide to Top Internships, 2009) with The McTigue Financial Group in Chicago expands beyond the real life work experience of a financial representative to community service learning.

Since 2008, the McTigue Financial Group has teamed up with Young Men’s Education Network (YMEN) and the residents of North Lawndale to provide layers of support and strategic initiatives that include providing educational expertise, financial wisdom, organizational stewardship, and community service projects that has engaged over 100 staff and college-level representatives from Northwestern Mutual Financial Network with  of community residents in creating positive community solutions.  The impact made from this partnership has helped to create a park for children, a residence for returning college students, a sports court for mentoring community youth, and an urban garden where flowers and vegetables symbolize the future of North Lawndale’s growth and productivity.

Northwestern Mutual's Community Service Award recognizes representatives whose outstanding dedication to local organizations has significantly bettered their communities. Since its inception in 1995, the Community Service Award has contributed nearly $3 million to almost 300 non-profit organizations throughout the country.

Vision, generosity, and commitment to community are characteristics of people who become volunteers. Each award recipient is honored with a $10,000 check presented to his or her charitable organization on behalf of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. The McTigue Financial Group is proud to acknowledge our representatives and team members who have earned this distinguished award.

2011 Community Service Award Winner, Steve Braun

McTigue Financial is proud to recognize Steve Braun as the recipient of the 2011 Community Service Award for his extensive dedication with Partnership for Cures.  Steve has been a donor and volunteer leader at Partnership for Cures for over 9 years, and a few years ago agreed to join the Executive Board.  He has been a great supporter of the Partnership for Cures Rediscovery Research™ model, connecting the organization to thought leaders inside and outside of medicine, matching donors to Rediscovery Research projects they can support, and providing business and marketing guidance.

Steve’s involvement with Partnership for Cures resonates on a personal level.  Like so many of us, Steve’s family and friends have been affected by disease issues.  Steve has responded by learning about and spreading the word about the quick, safe and affordable impact of the Rediscovery Research that repurposes already available drugs and devices so they can help patients with other diseases.   He has helped create the impact that Partnership for Cures has had on the lives of those around him who suffer from catastrophic diseases.

After hearing that one of his Northwestern Mutual colleagues had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Steve and the staff of Partnership for Cures we able to help this colleague enroll in a Rediscovery Research clinical research trial at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  After participating, this colleague, and the other 9 participants were all able to regain function that had been lost to the MS.  This colleague went from requiring a walker to being able to walk a mile without the need of assistance. Such an accomplishment is attributable to the funding of Rediscovery Research supported by Partnership for Cures.

Steve shared another story from a time when a client of his had made a significant donation to Partnership for Cures to support prostate cancer Rediscovery Research at the Partnership for Cures annual “The Longest Day of Golf” event.  Later that year, the donor was diagnosed with prostate cancer!  After contacting Steve, within 48 hours of his diagnosis, Partnership for Cures was able to connect the donor to researchers at the University of Chicago who were testing a Rediscovery Research surgery technique. While the donor was not eligible to participate in the clinical trial, he was able to visit the researchers and see how his contribution was making impact.  He made another donation to this research, and got support as he selected an alternative treatment, which went very well.

In addition to his involvement at the Partnership for Cures, Steve is also involved with the Marty Hennessey Jr. Tennis Foundation, where at-risk children receive coaching in tennis with the intention of attaining scholarships to college.

Steve is also a member of The Entrepreneurship Institute, which is a national non-profit that provides networking among CEO’s, and also hosts an annual one-day President Symposium, where business leaders share with each other their personal stories of success and failure.

A financial representative intern, Sean Ramsey, has rehabbed homes, volunteered at a thrift store, and mentored children at a women's and children's shelter at the Roseland Christian Ministry on the South Side of Chicago. “My most gratifying experiences have been during times of service,” Ramsey said. “It was a great honor to win this award. I was actually with my friends at Roseland when I learned we had been chosen,” he told his appreciative peers. As Sean's pastor at Roseland added, "Sean is only 22, but he has been volunteering here for four years. That, to me, is a significant contribution."

2009 Community Service Award Winner, Tobias Eng Toby Eng was awarded the Community Service Award on behalf of his volunteer efforts with Lydia Home, a Chicago based social service organization that has been serving children and families since 1916. Toby and his wife have been a host family with the Safe Families for Children program since 2006. As volunteers, The Engs provide a temporary place to stay for children from at-risk families. The Engs are part of a network of host families that extend the community safety net by providing parents in need – on their own or at the recommendation of a case worker-a loving sanctuary where they can safely place their children in times of crises. As a result, SFC is a voluntary, non-coercive alternative to the state child welfare system.

Experiences shared by our past winners:

Jamie Garard--

"I have been a tutor at Working in the Schools organization (WITS) for the past 10 years. Recently, one of the children that I had the opportunity to work with graduated from high school. I tutored Isidro when he was in 3rdand 4thgrade, was present at his graduation as a guest speaker. At the graduation I delivered a touching letter written by Isidro, with the intention of helping to raise funds and greater awareness for WITS."

During the course of my time at Northwestern Mutual, I am proud to have recruited five additional financial representatives to WITS organization.  As a result, WITS is now able to serve and mentor over 2,200 students through the help and devotion of its 1,500 tutors."

Hobie Murnane--

"I serve on the board of Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois.  The Boys Hope Girls Hope helps academically capable and motivated students in need to meet their full potential and become men and women for others providing value-centered, family-like homes, opportunities and education through college initiatives.

I have been connected with this charity since 1986.  In 2005, I was selected and grateful to receive the Community Service Award for my work on their behalf. We presented the charity with a $10,000 grant to the Executive Director, Patrick Hughes, from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation in support of their great work on behalf of “at risk” children."

             Mary Louise Pisone--

"I was privileged to be a Community Service Award recipient as the result of my relationship with the Les Turner ALS Foundation of Chicago, IL.  Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease) is a terminal neurological disorder that results in eventual total paralysis and death. During the disease’s progression, a person becomes a prisoner in their own body, and is gradually robbed of the ability to move, talk and, finally, to breathe.  All the while, their mind remains clear and alert.  The Foundation funds two ALS research labs at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH). A clinic at NMH provides patient care and services to ALS families in the tri-state area and beyond, a durable equipment bank, in-home nursing follow-ups and countless other services.

My husband, Richard, was diagnosed with ALS in 2000 and died 18 months later.  He, alongside my daughters and I, decided to take action by producing a family fundraiser called Rich Pisone’s Rockin’ Round the Clock for ALS.  Richard was actually able to participate (albeit in a wheelchair) in the first of the three annual events that netted over $100,000 to be used to fund research for a cure for ALS.

Since that time, my daughters and I have remained closely involved in the fund-raising activities of the Les Turner ALS Foundation and, last August, I was honored to be appointed to the Foundation’s Board of Directors, through which I’m able to reach out in new ways to educate, advocate and raise money to fund scientific research and patient services."
