A veteran of the Vietnam War, Thomas Walder spent four years in the Navy. Upon completion of his service, Tom worked as a sales representative before joining The McTigue Financial Group in 1973.
Tom's practice focuses on the personal market, including CPAs and attorneys. His mission is to help clients face their obligations. "They can live long productive lives but they could become disabled, or die prematurely. Our job is to make them face these issues and understand the importance of their responsibilities."
Tom, who has been a financial representative for 33 years, stresses the importance of doing joint work, which he says provides new representatives with the opportunity to take on larger cases in addition to learning from experienced financial representatives.
"Joint work can get new representatives involved in larger cases that would probably overwhelm them if they tried to take them on by themselves. Doing joint work provides the chance to work with seasoned representatives and the opportunity to learn more and raise their activity level much quicker."
"Financial representatives need to have a lot of referrals when they begin and do a lot of fact finders. Continually work on upgrading the quality of referrals that you are willing to take into your system. If we're dealing with successful people, their needs for insurance may never go away. The key is to find good people who care about something and have the money to buy the products that will address their needs."
Tom is well organized, has good work habits and gets along with people. His strength is getting his clients not to procrastinate.
Tom is involved in his community and serves on the board of the McGaw YMCA. Recognizing exemplary dedication to charitable organizations, The Northwestern Mutual Foundation yearly honors twenty-five "Outstanding Volunteers" with a grant to each organization they represent. Tom was awarded a Community Service Award for his efforts on behalf of the McGaw YMCA and the organization received a $10,000 grant.
Tom lives in Evanston with his wife, Collin Allison Walder. They have two daughters, Collin and Nicole as well as three grandchildren.
