Kurt Kidder was awarded a Community Service Award for his work with Chicago Association for Retarded Citizens (CARC), with supports more than 1,500 adults and children with developmental disabilities. Kurt contacted CARC in 1988 seeking to "give back" and volunteer his time to benefit persons with developmental disabilities. He joined the agency's Auxiliary Board of Directors and helped to organize several special events to raise funds for CARC. While on the Auxiliary Board, Kurt was instrumental in initiating the first CARC Holiday Party for the adults served in the Community Living Program and making sure each guest had a special gift. CARC serves more than 240 people in this programmany are without families and more than 90% are economically disadvantaged. The initial Holiday Party was a tremendous success and since has become an annual event. He has "adopted" CARC's Annual Appeal, increasing appeal revenue by over 300% in his three terms as Chairman of CARC's Board of Directors. During his tenure as Chairman, the Annual Appeal became tremendously important because these funds could supplement under-funded budgets in children's services, primarily early intervention for infants and special education schools for youth with developmental disabilities. "I have been involved with this organization for over 20 years serving people with development disabilities and special needs. It's great to be able to contribute to an organization that does so much for so many," Kurt said. |
